The map you choose shapes everything about your ARK: Survival Ascended playthrough — the biomes you survive, the creatures you can tame, the bosses you fight and the resources you gather. This guide compares every released map, explains what makes each unique, and gives a clear recommendation for where to start and the order to play them.
The Island — start here
The Island is the original ARK map and the best choice for newcomers. It has balanced biomes (beaches, redwoods, mountains, snow and swamp), all the core creatures, and the full boss progression (Broodmother, Megapithecus, Dragon, Overseer) that teaches you the endgame loop. If it’s your first ASA character, start here and learn the fundamentals before moving on.
The recommended progression
As the maps release on ASA, a clean order that builds difficulty and mechanics naturally is:
- The Island — learn the game and the bosses.
- Scorched Earth — a harsh desert where heat and water management become survival mechanics, and you meet Wyverns, Mantis and the Manticore boss.
- Aberration — an underground, radiation-soaked world with no flyers, unique creatures (Rock Drakes, Reapers), gliding and zip-lines, and the Rockwell boss. A real difficulty step up.
- Extinction — a ruined future Earth with Titans, element mechanics and corrupted creatures; endgame territory.
- The Center — a huge, beautiful free-roam map; less of a difficulty jump and fantastic for building and exploring.
How the maps differ
- Climate & survival — Scorched and Aberration add heat, water and radiation as constant threats; The Island and The Center are gentler.
- Creatures — each map has exclusive tames (Wyverns on Scorched, Rock Drakes on Aberration) worth transferring elsewhere via a cluster.
- Bosses & rewards — different maps unlock different Tek engrams, so endgame players run several.
Running multiple maps
The full ARK experience links several maps in a cluster so you transfer characters, tames and items between them — exactly how the official network works. See our cluster setup guide. Use our ARK interactive maps for spawn points and resource nodes on each map.
