ARK: Survival Ascended has hundreds of creatures, but a handful are genuine must-tames that carry you through the whole game. This tier list ranks the best dinos by role — farming, combat, travel and utility — so you know exactly what to prioritise at each stage.
S-tier farming & utility
- Ankylosaurus — the metal, crystal and obsidian miner. Nothing replaces it.
- Therizinosaurus — the best all-round gatherer (wood, fibre, berries, meat) and a top combat/boss dino. The single most valuable tame in the game for many players.
- Argentavis — the early flyer that carries an Anky, reduces ore weight and acts as a mobile base. Your mid-game workhorse.
- Castoroides — wood farming plus a portable smithy.
S/A-tier combat & bosses
- Rex — the dependable boss and PvE powerhouse; easy to breed in numbers.
- Giganotosaurus — raw damage king, but its rage mechanic makes it risky.
- Yutyrannus — the team buffer for boss fights (Courage roar).
- Shadowmane — a strong, agile modern pick in ASA.
- Megatherium — boss-arena staple, devastating against the Broodmother.
Travel & specialist tames
- Pteranodon — your first flyer; cheap early mobility.
- Spino — a powerful amphibious mount, great early-to-mid combat.
- Daeodon — the combat healer for boss runs.
- Beelzebufo / Achatina — passive producers of cementing paste and other materials.
What to tame first
A practical early order: a Parasaur or Trike to start, a Pteranodon for mobility, an Argentavis, then an Ankylosaurus to unlock metal — that chain opens up the whole mid-game. See our starter dinos guide and plan tames with the Taming Calculator.
