Corruption is one of the most misunderstood systems in Conan Exiles. That creeping purple bar eats into your health and stamina, and if you do not manage it, you will walk into a fight already weakened. But corruption is not purely a punishment any more. Since the Age of Sorcery, deliberately corrupting your character unlocks some of the strongest perks in the game. This guide covers every cause of corruption, every reliable way to remove it, and how the corrupted attribute system fits into a sorcery build.
What corruption actually does
Corruption is shown as a purple meter that overlaps your health and stamina bars. The more corruption you carry, the more of your maximum health and maximum stamina is locked away and unusable. The base values do not change, but corruption effectively shrinks the usable portion of both bars until you cleanse it. At high corruption you can be left with a fraction of your real health pool, which is why veterans clear it before tackling a boss or a dungeon like the Dregs or the Warmaker’s Sanctuary.
What causes corruption
Corruption comes from exposure to dark magic and from your own choices. The most common sources are:
- Corrupted regions and ruins. Many caves, ancient ruins and magic-soaked areas of the Exiled Lands and the Isle of Siptah apply corruption while you stand in them. The screen takes on a purple tint to warn you.
- Fighting magical or undead enemies. Certain demonic and undead foes inflict corruption when they hit you.
- Casting sorcery. Sorcery is powered by corruption. Channeling spells and using a sorcerous focus raises your corruption as the cost of the power.
- The Bridge of the Betrayer and similar story areas. Some scripted locations apply heavy corruption that you must outpace or cleanse afterward.
- Corrupting attributes on purpose. Sacrificing a stat into its corrupted line adds permanent corruption that ordinary cleansing cannot remove (more on this below).
How to remove corruption
Most corruption is temporary and can be cleansed. The classic method is the entertainer thrall, better known as a dancer. When a dancer performs, anyone standing inside the effect radius (roughly within a few foundations) gains the Entertained buff, which both heals and strips corruption over time. The higher the dancer’s tier, the faster corruption drains, with named (Tier 4) entertainers clearing it fastest. Capturing a strong dancer from a known camp and placing them at your base is the cheapest long-term cleansing station.
If you are out in the field with no dancer nearby, you have consumable and item options instead. The most accessible is the Cleansing Brew, a craftable drink that removes a chunk of corruption each time you sip it.
| Removal method | How it works | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Dancer (Entertainer thrall) | AoE Entertained buff cleanses corruption and heals while you stand in range; higher tier clears faster | Base cleansing and group play |
| Cleansing Brew | Crafted from Herbal Tea and a Yellow Lotus Blossom; each drink removes a portion of corruption | Cleansing on the go |
| Heart of a Hero | Rare consumable that clears corruption | Emergency full purge |
| Champion’s Leggings | Armor piece that slowly bleeds off corruption while worn | Passive trickle during exploration |
The Cleansing Brew is the workhorse. The recipe is one Yellow Lotus Blossom plus one Herbal Tea, brewed at a stove. Herbal Tea in turn is made from purified water, aloe leaves and plant fiber, so a handful of Yellow Lotus plants and a stove keeps you stocked indefinitely. Carry a few brews before any corrupted dungeon and you can cleanse mid-run rather than retreating. For where to find the lotus and other reagents you will need, our resource farming guide maps out the best gathering routes.
Corrupted attributes: when corruption is the point
The Age of Sorcery turned corruption into a build choice. Once you reach heavy corruption (around 40 percent or more), you can spend Soul Essence to corrupt individual attribute points. Only three attributes can be corrupted: Strength, Vitality and Authority. Each corrupted point swaps the normal perk line for a darker, often stronger one, and adds a slice of permanent corruption that dancers and brews cannot wash away. The only way to undo it is a full attribute reset.
Soul Essence is the currency for all of this. You farm it by performing the Soul Drain ritual on a follower or thrall placed on a Sacrificial Stone. Corrupting costs Soul Essence per point, so plan your sacrifices before you commit. Broad strokes of what each line offers:
- Strength (Scourge line): bonus weapon damage that scales with your corrupted Strength, rewarding pure melee burst builds.
- Vitality (Twisted Flesh line): survivability and regeneration tuned around running with a corrupted health pool.
- Authority (Frenzy line): the standout for thrall commanders. The Frenzy perk boosts your follower’s damage output, while a separate Authority perk, Flesh Bond, splits incoming damage between you and your war party.
Because corrupting attributes permanently shrinks your usable health and stamina, most players keep a dancer at base and lean on the corrupted perks during fights, accepting the smaller bars as the trade. If you run an Authority-heavy build, pair it with a strong roster from our followers and war party guide.
Practical tips for managing corruption
- Cleanse to zero before any boss or corrupted dungeon so you enter at full health.
- Keep a Tier 3 or named dancer at your main base as a permanent cleansing point.
- Stock several Cleansing Brews before long expeditions into Siptah’s vaults or the Exiled Lands’ deeper ruins.
- If you are building a sorcerer, accept a baseline of corruption and budget cleansing time around your casting, rather than fighting it constantly.
- Remember that corruption from corrupted attributes is permanent and cannot be cleansed without a reset.
If you are hosting a community where players experiment with sorcery and corrupted builds, server-side settings let you tune corruption gain, thrall behavior and more. You can adjust those values on a managed Conan Exiles game server, and our Conan Exiles setup documentation walks through the configuration options step by step.
Frequently asked questions
Does corruption go away on its own in Conan Exiles?
No. Temporary corruption stays until you actively remove it with a dancer, a Cleansing Brew, a Heart of a Hero, or by wearing Champion’s Leggings. Simply leaving a corrupted area stops new corruption from building but does not clear what you already have.
Can dancers remove corruption from corrupted attributes?
No. The corruption added when you corrupt Strength, Vitality or Authority is permanent. Dancers and brews only clear ordinary corruption from spells, enemies and corrupted regions. To remove attribute corruption you have to perform a full attribute reset.
Is it worth corrupting my attributes?
It depends on your build. The corrupted perks, especially the Authority line for thrall masters and the Strength line for melee, are powerful enough that many players accept the permanent loss of usable health and stamina. If you prefer maximum survivability or play solo without a war party, an uncorrupted build is often safer.
