DayZ Animal Spawn Locations: Where to Find Bears, Wolves, Deer & Boar (All Maps)

Meat and fat keep you alive in DayZ, and pelts turn into some of the best cold-weather gear in the game — but the animals that feed you share the map with predators that will end a 20-hour run in seconds. This guide covers where every animal spawns across Chernarus+, Livonia and Sakhal, which ones to hunt, and which ones to run from.

The predators: bears and wolves

Two animals in DayZ actively hunt you. Learn their ranges before you wander into them.

Bears

Bears are the single most dangerous animal in DayZ — a couple of hits will down a fully-geared survivor. They roam solo through dense forest and mountain territory. The server files define 71 bear territories on Chernarus, 85 on Livonia, and 58 on Sakhal, so Livonia is statistically the most bear-infested map. Each territory is a roaming zone rather than a fixed point, which is why the interactive map shows spawn ranges instead of single dots. Kill one and you get a huge amount of meat, fat, and a pelt for a bear backpack or coat — but only take the fight with a high-caliber rifle and room to back up.

Wolves

Wolves hunt in packs, which makes them arguably deadlier than bears for an unprepared player. Chernarus has by far the most wolf activity with 276 wolf territories, versus 93 on Livonia and 54 on Sakhal. You’ll usually hear them howl before you see them. A pack can be beaten with a shotgun or a full-auto rifle and steady aim, and each wolf drops meat, fat, and a pelt used for wolf armbands and courier bags.

Big game: the animals worth hunting

These are your reliable food source once you can reach the interior.

• Red Deer & Roe Deer — the classic DayZ hunt. Deer graze open fields and forest edges away from the coast; red deer give the most meat. Chernarus alone carries 255 red-deer and 276 roe-deer territories.
• Wild Boar — aggressive if cornered but easy meat, found in woodland across all three maps (207 territories on Chernarus). Watch for them at night near villages.
• Pigs, Cattle, Sheep & Goats — domestic animals cluster around farms and villages, making them the fastest early-game food if you spawn on the coast and push to the nearest settlement.

Small game for early survival

Fresh spawns don’t need a rifle to eat. Hares are the most common animal in the game by a wide margin — 882 territories on Chernarus, 641 on Sakhal — and can be taken with a bow, a thrown knife, or a suppressed pistol without drawing infected. Foxes are similarly widespread and give a pelt. Chickens around farms drop feathers for arrows and quick meat.

Infected concentrations: plan your loot runs around them

The same map file that places wildlife also defines infected (zombie) territories — and their density. Infected cluster hardest around military bases, city tiers and industrial zones, which is exactly where the best loot spawns. The map’s infected layer shows how many can spawn at once per zone (military and city tiers are the thickest), so you can see which high-loot areas are crawling before you commit. How animal spawns actually work

DayZ uses roaming territories, not fixed spawn points. Each animal type has a set of zones with a center and a radius; the game spawns groups within those zones and they wander. That’s why you won’t always find a bear at the exact same tree — but you will find one somewhere inside its territory.
