Breeding produces the strongest creatures in ARK: Survival Ascended — stat-stacked, mutated and imprinted dinos that outclass anything you can tame from the wild. It’s also the deepest system in the game. This guide walks the full chain: mating, eggs and incubation, raising babies, imprinting for huge bonuses, and stacking mutations to build a perfect line.
The breeding chain at a glance
| Step | What happens | Key tool |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Mating | Male + female → live birth or fertilized egg | Two compatible parents |
| 2. Incubate | Hold the egg at the right temperature | Air conditioners / incubator |
| 3. Raise | Hand-feed baby, then trough at juvenile | Feeding trough + food stock |
| 4. Imprint | Fulfil care requests → up to 100% imprint | Stay near the baby |
| 5. Mutate | Stack stat/colour mutations over generations | Clean stat parent lines |
Why breed instead of tame?
A bred baby inherits the higher of each parent’s stats, so pairing a high-health parent with a high-melee parent combines both into one offspring. Stack that over generations and add imprinting and mutations, and you end up with creatures far beyond wild tames — essential for bosses and PvP.
Step 1: Mating
Place a compatible male and female of the same species close together and enable mating. After a mating timer, mammals give live birth, while egg-layers drop a fertilized egg.
Step 2: Incubating the egg
A fertilized egg must be held at the right temperature or it loses health and dies. Use air conditioners (the cleanest method), standing torches/campfires for heat, or an incubator for precise control. See our dedicated egg incubation guide for the temperature ranges.
Step 3: Raising the baby
This is the demanding part. A newborn has a tiny inventory and must be hand-fed constantly through the baby stage — keep food in its inventory and don’t let it starve. Once it reaches the juvenile stage it can eat from a feeding trough, easing the workload. Plan to be available during the baby phase, or raise on a server with boosted maturation rates so it passes quickly.
Step 4: Imprinting
Imprinting is the biggest payoff of breeding. As the baby grows it periodically requests care — a cuddle, a walk, or a specific food. Fulfil each request to raise the imprint percentage. Reaching 100% imprint gives a permanent boost to the creature’s stats, plus a significant bonus to damage dealt and damage resisted whenever the player who imprinted it is riding it. That ridden bonus is why imprinted boss dinos massively outperform un-imprinted ones.
Step 5: Mutations
Each breeding has a small chance to roll a mutation — a stat increase and/or a new colour. Serious breeders track mutation counts on each parent line and stack mutations across generations to push a single stat (usually health or melee) far above wild caps. It’s a long project, but it’s how the best PvP and boss dinos are made.
Frequently asked questions
How does stat inheritance work in ARK breeding?
Each baby has a chance to inherit the higher of each parent’s stats. By breeding a high-health parent with a high-melee parent repeatedly, you eventually get an offspring with both top stats — then you breed that line forward and add mutations to push beyond wild levels.
Why is imprinting so important?
A 100% imprint gives a permanent stat boost and a large bonus to damage dealt and damage resisted while the imprinter rides the creature. An imprinted boss dino vastly outperforms an un-imprinted one — skipping imprints throws away most of breeding’s value, which is why you stay near the baby through raising.
How do mutations work?
Each breeding can randomly roll a mutation that bumps a stat and/or adds a colour. Breeders stack these over many generations onto one line to push health or melee far past wild caps. It’s slow and deliberate — you track mutation counts on each parent and only breed the clean, high-stat survivors forward.
