DayZ Best Loot Locations: Military Bases and High-Tier Gear

In DayZ, gearing up is a calculated gamble. The best weapons, ammunition, body armor and medical supplies are concentrated in a handful of high-value military locations on Chernarus, and almost every other survivor on the server knows exactly where those spots are. This guide breaks down the top loot locations on the vanilla Chernarus map, explains the loot tier system that governs what spawns where, and weighs the risk against the reward at each one so you can decide which runs are worth your life.

How DayZ loot tiers actually work

Loot in DayZ is governed by the Central Loot Economy (CLE), the system that decides how many of each item can exist on a server, where it spawns, and how rarity is distributed. Every building and item carries category and location tags, and the map itself is divided into tier zones. As a rough rule, lower tiers cluster along the coast where fresh spawns appear, while higher tiers sit in the remote north and at the largest military installations. Coastal military spots like Balota sit in a low tier; the prison island is a step up; the North-West Airfield is higher again; and Tisy in the far north occupies the top tier. The practical takeaway: the deeper inland and further north you push, the better the gear gets, and the more committed (and dangerous) the journey becomes.

Loot also splits into broad categories tied to building type. Military structures (barracks, tents, hangars) hold weapons, ammunition, military clothing and backpacks. Police stations spawn handguns, vests and police gear. Hospitals and medical buildings hold medical supplies. Industrial yards and garages supply tools, fuel and crafting resources. Knowing the category tells you which buildings to clear first when you reach a town.

Tisy Military Base: the top-tier endgame run

Tisy Military Base sits in the extreme north of South Zagoria, atop Vidy in the foothills of the Black Mountains, roughly 4 km south of the Russian border. It is the highest loot tier on Chernarus and the place to find the best weapons, attachments and rare gear in the game outside of dynamic events. The base was built under Soviet rule as a surface-to-air missile and radar site, and was later expanded with a large forest camp to its south. That sprawling layout means a thorough Tisy run takes time, and time is exactly what gets players killed. Because it is so far from the coast, anyone you meet at Tisy is geared, deliberate and almost certainly armed. This is an endgame destination, not a fresh-spawn errand.

North-West Airfield (Vybor Air Base): the most famous hotspot

The North-West Airfield, officially Vybor Air Base, sits north of the town of Vybor and is the largest single location of any kind on Chernarus, with a 1.4 km runway, a parallel taxiway and military installations strung along its length. It has earned a legendary reputation as one of the most dangerous places on the map precisely because it reliably yields high-tier military loot. Key spots include the south barracks compound in the south-west, the cluster of aircraft hangars in the south-east, and the C-130J wrecks. Those wrecks are static events that spawn Airplane Crates, which contain a variety of valuable loot, making them among the best containers to check on the entire map. The trade-off is brutal: the NWAF is the single most contested location on Chernarus, and open ground between buildings leaves you exposed to snipers.

Zelenogorsk Military Base and Veresnik (VMC)

Zelenogorsk Military Base is appended to the south-west end of Zelenogorsk in western South Zagoria. Its urban surroundings and large railyard make it distinct: the base splits into a central yard with barracks, a railyard hosting most of the area’s military cargo containers, and an often-overlooked maintenance area of garages. Because it sits beside a sizable town, you can pair a military run with residential and police looting in one stop.

Veresnik Military Base, commonly abbreviated VMC and also called Vybor or Dichina Military Base, is a small complex on the Dichina plain south-east of Vybor, recognizable by its triangular perimeter wall and its position at the base of a hill. It is a compact military stop with general military loot, attachments and the occasional backpack or medical item, and its smaller footprint often means fewer players than the NWAF. Other inland camps worth knowing are Myshkino Military Camp at the far western edge of the map, Pavlovo’s base south-east of town, and the Balota Airfield camp on the south coast, which is the closest quick gear-up to fresh spawns but is frequently camped by bandits.

Helicopter crash sites: the highest-tier dynamic loot

Helicopter crash sites are random dynamic events that are typically the source of the highest-tier military loot in the game. Two wreck types exist: the American UH-1Y Venom and the Soviet Mi-8. Three crash sites spawn across Chernarus at predetermined but randomly chosen locations. Since update 1.14, a freshly spawned crash creates a loud explosion that can be heard for several kilometers, which makes it easier to locate but also alerts every other survivor in earshot. Expect 3 to 7 military infected guarding the wreck, plus rival players drawn by the same blast. Crash sites are the purest high-risk, high-reward play in DayZ.

For a deeper breakdown of how crashes spawn, despawn and what they carry, see our dedicated DayZ helicopter crash sites guide.

Police, medical and industrial loot

You do not always need a military base to gear up. Police stations spawn medium-tier firearms such as the CR75, IJ-70 and CR-61 Skorpion, along with vests and other useful gear, and they come in two sizes: the small Village Police Station found across towns, and the larger City Police Station that can hold higher-tier police loot. Hospitals and medical buildings are where you stock the bandages, saline, antibiotics and other supplies that keep you alive through the diseases covered in our DayZ disease and sickness guide. Industrial yards, warehouses and garages supply tools, fuel and crafting resources. A smart loadout run weaves all of these together, then heads inland for the military payoff. Once you have a rifle, pair it properly using our weapon attachments guide and round out your kit with the right clothing, gear and backpacks.

If you play on a different map, the high-tier spots shift. The Frostline DLC map Sakhal, for example, adds Beached Containers, dynamic-event military crates washed up along the coast whose loot overrides the local area tier, plus bases like Wolf’s Peak; we cover that frozen island in the DayZ Sakhal map guide. Community mod maps change the rules further still, as the brutal Namalsk mod demonstrates with its own loot economy.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best loot location in DayZ?

For static locations, Tisy Military Base in the far north holds the top loot tier on Chernarus, and the North-West Airfield (Vybor Air Base) is the most famous high-tier spot thanks to its barracks and C-130J Airplane Crates. For the single best loot in the game, helicopter crash sites are typically the highest-tier source, but they are dynamic, loud and heavily contested.

Where do helicopter crash sites spawn?

Three crash sites spawn across Chernarus at predetermined but randomly chosen locations, so they are not in fixed spots each server restart. Since update 1.14 a fresh crash produces a loud explosion audible for several kilometers. Expect UH-1Y Venom or Mi-8 wrecks guarded by 3 to 7 military infected.

Are military bases worth the risk for new players?

Coastal spots like the Balota Airfield camp let fresh spawns gear up quickly but are frequently camped by bandits. Police stations and city loot are a lower-risk way to find a first weapon. The high-tier inland bases like NWAF and Tisy are best attempted once you already have some gear, since the players you meet there will almost always be armed.

Hunting these spots is far more rewarding with a crew watching your back; spinning up your own private DayZ server to play with friends lets you run coordinated military loot sweeps without random KOS interruptions, and you can fine-tune the experience using our DayZ server setup documentation.
