The Isle Evrima Herbivore Survival Guide

Playing a herbivore in The Isle: Evrima is a different game from playing a predator. You are not hunting other dinosaurs — you are growing fast, eating the right plants, staying with the herd, and turning your tail, horns, or armor into a wall that ambush carnivores would rather not test. This guide walks through every playable herbivore in the current Evrima build, how the diet system fuels your growth, and the practical defense tactics that keep a juvenile alive long enough to become an adult.

The 9 Playable Evrima Herbivores (June 2026)

As of the current Evrima roster there are exactly nine playable herbivores. A common mistake is to count Gallimimus among them — it is actually an omnivore that eats frogs, crabs, eggs, and hatchlings alongside plants, so it does not belong on this list. The true herbivores are:

  • Triceratops — playable since patch 0.20.109 (June 22, 2025); the roster’s best 1v1 tank.
  • Stegosaurus — thagomizer tail with the highest single-hit damage in the game.
  • Diabloceratops — mid-size horned bruiser, strong in groups.
  • Maiasaura — herd-bound speed tank that outruns most threats.
  • Tenontosaurus — bite, claw, kick, and a tail slam that can stun.
  • Pachycephalosaurus — the headbutt/charge specialist.
  • Dryosaurus — small, fast, evasion-focused grazer.
  • Hypsilophodon — tiny early-game survivor that relies on speed and cover.
  • Kentrosaurus — spiked thagomizer cousin of Stego, punishing to flank.

Diet and Nutrients: How Herbivores Grow Fast

Every herbivore grows by eating plants that supply three nutrient categories. The growth bonus scales with how many different nutrients you have active at once. Hitting all three at the same time is the strongest growth buff in the game (+50% growth), and the balanced “triple” also grants a stamina-regen bonus of up to +15%.

Nutrient setupEffect
One nutrient+15% growth
Two different nutrients+30% growth
All three nutrients (balanced // S)+50% growth (no stamina-regen bonus)
Concentrated triple-// diet~+25% scent / night-vision range
2-1 // mix~+15% scent / night-vision range

Note the split: the range buffs for scent and night vision come from concentrating the // nutrient, not from a balanced meal. So if you are a small herbivore who needs to smell carnivores coming early, you may deliberately skew your diet toward // rather than chasing the balanced triple. Mushrooms are a fast meal anywhere on the map, but overeating them risks mushroom sickness, and berry bushes are eaten by every herbivore. For a deeper breakdown of how predators read your trail, see our Evrima scent and smell system guide.

Herding and Group Safety

Herbivores are at their strongest in numbers. A lone Maiasaura is prey; a herd of them can chase off most small and mid carnivores. The grouping system lets you form and follow a herd, share calls, and coordinate movement so juveniles travel inside a ring of adults. Practical herd habits that keep groups alive:

  • Keep juveniles in the center, adults on the perimeter facing outward.
  • Travel between water and food in daylight; carnivores exploit night-vision advantages after dark.
  • Assign a couple of high-// scouts to detect predators before they close in.
  • Pick open ground when threatened — tail and horn weapons need room to swing, and forests favor pouncers.

Defending Against Carnivores

The biggest threat to a herbivore is not the bite — it is the bleed. Bleed ticks continuously, even while you stand perfectly still, and moving or sprinting raises the bleed rate. A stationary dinosaur can still die from blood loss. The only way to truly stop it is to wallow in a mud pool, which clots wounds and, as a bonus, masks your scent and blood trail so predators cannot track you. Know your nearest mud pools the way you know your nearest water.

Understand what the predator sees, too. Carnivore scent vision lights your footprints yellow and your blood pools and trails red — which is exactly why mud-wallowing to stop a bleed is also a stealth move. Many of Evrima’s hunters share a pounce/latch attack: Troodon, Omniraptor, Herrerasaurus, and Austroraptor can all pin you, and Allosaurus has a heavyweight pounce. Carnotaurus is the fastest apex land predator in the game, so outrunning one is rarely an option — you fight or you reach the herd. Diabloceratops and the ceratopsians answer pouncers with horn charges; Stegosaurus and Kentrosaurus answer them with the thagomizer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Gallimimus a herbivore in Evrima?

No. Gallimimus is an omnivore. It eats plants but also frogs, crabs, eggs, and hatchlings, and it can dig up food. It is not one of the nine playable herbivores.

What is the fastest way to grow a herbivore?

Eat plants covering all three nutrient categories at once for the +50% growth bonus — the strongest growth buff available. Two different nutrients give +30% and a single nutrient gives +15%, so always diversify your meals while growing.

How do I stop bleeding when a carnivore wounds me?

Find a mud pool and wallow in it. Resting slows bleed but does not stop it — bleed ticks even when you are motionless, and you can die standing still. Only mud fully clots the wound, and it hides your scent and blood trail from trackers at the same time.
