DayZ has one of the most detailed medical systems in survival gaming — and not knowing it will get you killed by something as simple as a cut or a cold. This guide covers the DayZ medical system and how to heal.
Bleeding — the immediate killer
Cuts, gunshots and zombie hits cause bleeding, shown by a blood-drop icon. Bleeding drains your blood fast and will kill you. Apply rags or bandages immediately to stop it. Always carry rags (tear them from clothing) — this is the single most important medical habit in DayZ.
Blood and health
Your character has both blood and health. Lose too much blood and you go unconscious; lose health and you die. You regenerate blood and health naturally by staying well-fed, hydrated and not sick — eating and drinking to “energized” and “hydrated” status is what heals you over time. For severe blood loss, a blood transfusion or saline restores blood fast (transfusions need matching blood types).
Broken bones
Falls and heavy hits can break your legs, leaving you crawling. Craft and apply a splint (rags + sticks) to fix it, or use morphine for an instant fix.
Sickness
DayZ models several illnesses, each with a cause and a cure:
- Cholera — from drinking unpurified pond water. Causes vomiting and water loss. Treat with antibiotics (tetracycline) and stay hydrated.
- Food poisoning — from rotten food. Charcoal tablets help.
- Cold / influenza — from being wet and cold. Warm up, stay dry, and use vitamins.
- Wound infection — from untreated injuries. Disinfect wounds and use antibiotics.
Prevention beats cure: boil pond water, don’t eat rotten food, and stay warm and dry.
Carry a basic medkit
A survival kit should always include rags/bandages, a splint or morphine, charcoal tablets, tetracycline and vitamins. See our beginner’s survival guide for the bigger picture.
Heal up with friends on your own server
Medical play (and blood transfusions) is far easier with a group. On your own DayZ server you can adjust difficulty and survival settings to the experience your community wants.
