DayZ is one of the most unforgiving survival games ever made — your first hours are usually spent freezing, starving, or bleeding out on the coast. This beginner’s guide covers how to survive your first day in DayZ.
Your first priorities
You spawn on the coast with almost nothing. In order: find food and water, manage your temperature, and get basic gear before you even think about guns or other players.
Food, water and health
- Drink from wells and ponds (boil pond water or risk cholera) and eat early — fruit, canned food, or hunted/cooked meat.
- Watch your status icons — they tell you when you’re hungry, thirsty, cold or sick. Don’t let any go critical.
- Don’t eat rotten food or drink dirty water unless desperate — sickness can kill you slowly.
Temperature kills
Getting wet and cold is one of the biggest early killers. Stay dry, build a fire to warm up and dry clothes, and grab a jacket and headgear as soon as you can. A fireplace kit (with the right materials) is one of the first things to learn.
Gear up carefully
Loot houses, sheds and barns inland — the coast is picked clean and full of fresh spawns (and bandits). Grab a bag, a knife, a way to make fire, and rags (for bandages — bleeding is deadly). Avoid the high-tier military zones until you know what you’re doing; that’s where geared players hunt.
Other players are the real danger
Most deaths in DayZ come from other survivors, not zombies. Treat everyone as a threat, use voice carefully, and don’t run into the open in a hot zone. Learning when to hide and when to fight is the core skill.
Survive with friends on your own server
DayZ is far more fun (and survivable) with a group. On your own DayZ server you set the rules — loot, zombies, time of day — and play with just your friends, no random KOS bandits. Plan your routes with our free DayZ interactive map.
Frequently asked questions
How do you survive in DayZ as a beginner?
Prioritise food, water and staying warm and dry, watch your status icons, carry rags for bleeding, loot inland away from the coast, and treat every player as a threat.
What kills you most in DayZ?
Other players, then the environment (cold, hunger, thirst, sickness). Zombies are a smaller threat than both.
How do you stop bleeding in DayZ?
Apply rags or bandages immediately — bleeding will kill you. Always carry rags from torn clothing.
