The lay of the land
Chernarus is a fictional former-Soviet republic. Most players spawn along the south and east coast and move inland and north as they gear up. The map runs from coastal towns up through farmland and forests to the dangerous northern military zones.
Key locations
- Coastal cities (Cherno, Elektro, Berezino) — high traffic, decent loot, dangerous with fresh spawns and snipers.
- Inland towns & villages — safer early looting for food, tools and clothing.
- Military bases (Tisy, NWAF — Northwest Airfield, Vybor, Myshkino) — the best weapons and gear, and the most dangerous PvP in the game.
- Tisy in the far north-west is the top-tier military loot zone — high risk, high reward.
How to navigate
DayZ has no in-game GPS minimap by default — you navigate with a physical map item, a compass and landmarks. Learning the road and rail network is part of the skill.
