Conan Exiles Base Building Guide: Tiers, Stations & Defence

A Conan Exiles base building guide — the T1-T3 material tiers, essentials, where to build, and defending against the Purge.

A strong base is your survival and your statement in Conan Exiles — a place to craft, store loot, and withstand the Purge and other players. This guide covers base building in Conan Exiles.

The building tiers

Building pieces come in three strength tiers — don’t waste effort on the weak ones for your real base:

  • T1 Sandstone — cheapest and weakest. Fine for a temporary starter shelter only.
  • T2 Stonebrick / Insulated Wood — moderate strength, decent mid-game.
  • T3 Reinforced Stone / Black Ice — the strongest. This is what you build your permanent, raid-resistant base from.

Save your serious building effort for T3 — T1/T2 walls are easily destroyed.

The essentials

  • Foundations first — everything needs support; lay foundations, then walls, ceilings and a roof.
  • A bed/bedroll for your respawn point.
  • Crafting stations — campfire, furnace, blacksmith’s bench, armorer’s bench, and a Wheel of Pain for thralls.
  • Storage — chests and vaults to keep your loot safe.

Where to build

Pick a spot with resources nearby (stone, wood, iron), defensible terrain, and access to water — but remember the Purge difficulty scales with location, so a remote, hard-to-reach base is safer. Cliffs and elevation help against both NPCs and players. Plan your material costs with our free building calculator.

Defend it

Place fighter thralls and archers to guard your base (see our thralls guide), and build in layers so a single breach doesn’t expose everything. The Purge will test your walls.

Build freely on your own server

On your own Conan Exiles server you control build limits, decay and raid settings — so the base you build with friends actually lasts. See our building decay guide.
