DayZ Fishing Guide: How to Catch and Cook Fish

Fishing is one of the most reliable food sources in DayZ. Once you have a rod, a hook and a steady supply of worms, you can pull an almost endless stream of protein out of any inland pond or stretch of coast, no rifle and no risky animal hunt required. This guide walks through crafting the gear, finding bait, choosing a fishing spot and turning your catch into a safe, cooked meal. Every recipe and mechanic below is drawn from the official DayZ Wiki.

Crafting a fishing rod

The craftable rod is the Simple Fishing Rod, known as the Improvised Fishing Rod from its introduction in Alpha 0.52 (2014) until Beta 0.63 in late 2018. It is made from just two items: a Long Wooden Stick (a Sharpened Stick also works) combined with a piece of Rope.

  • Long Wooden Stick — chop a bush or small tree with a knife, axe or another sharp tool to harvest sticks.
  • Rope — found in residential and industrial loot, or craftable from rags or from a Pile of Guts using a knife.

There is also a manufactured Fishing Rod that spawns as loot, but the Simple Fishing Rod is what you will usually build yourself in the field. A rod alone catches nothing — you still need a hook and bait.

Making a hook and bait

You can use a metal Fishing Hook found as loot, but the field-craftable option is the Bone Fishing Hook. Combine a single Bone with a Knife to produce one hook. According to the wiki, you can substitute the knife with a saw, axe, pickaxe, sword, screwdriver, crowbar or a bayonet. A Bone Fishing Hook has 10 uses and a small (0.5%) chance to be lost on any given cast.

For bait you want Earthworms. Worms are dug straight out of the ground: equip a digging tool, look down at your feet and select the “dig for worms” action. The wiki lists knives, shovels, pickaxes and hoes as valid digging tools, and notes that digging with a shovel yields 3 Earthworms at a time. Conveniently, earthworms do not spoil, so you can stockpile them indefinitely.

Combine a hook with an earthworm to create Fishing Bait, then attach the baited hook to your rod. You are now ready to cast.

Where to fish and what you catch

Rod fishing works in two kinds of water:

  • Fresh water — inland ponds and rivers yield Carp. The map of Chernarus and Livonia is dotted with small ponds, so you are rarely far from a freshwater spot.
  • Salt water — the coastal sea yields Mackerel. This makes the coast doubly useful, since many players spawn there.

To cast, stand at the water’s edge with your baited rod and use the cast action, holding until the action completes. When a fish bites you will see a distinct tugging cue, at which point you reel in the catch. The wiki notes that fishing is most productive in the early morning and evening, with a noticeably higher bite chance during those windows. Be aware that not every catch is a fish — junk items like a Cooking Pot or Wellies can come up on the line.

Fishing traps (passive method)

If you would rather set bait and walk away, DayZ offers two trap types. The Small Fish Trap is built from a plastic bottle and catches small fish such as bitterlings or sardines. The Fish Net Trap is crafted from wire and netting and pulls in the same carp and mackerel you would catch on a rod. Both are baited with earthworms and need time to work before you collect a result. Traps are a good way to passively gather food while you handle other survival tasks.

Filleting and cooking your fish

Never eat raw fish — consuming raw meat will make your character sick. Before cooking, a whole Carp must be sliced with a Knife into 2 Carp Fillets (the process also produces guts). Keep an eye on your knife’s durability, since you need a working blade to both make the hook and clean the catch.

Once filleted, cook the fish on a fireplace using a sharpened stick, a cooking pot or a frying pan. Watch the cooking state closely: undercooked fish can still make you ill, and leaving it on too long turns it into a Burned Fish Fillet with poor nutritional return. The goal is a properly cooked fillet, which restores energy and hydration safely.

This is also where fat (lard) is handy. The wiki notes that baking food with fat in a cooking pot or frying pan prevents that food from losing some of its quantity to the cooking process, so adding fat helps you keep more of the meal from each fillet. Fat itself comes from skinning and quartering medium-to-large animals with a knife, so a successful hunt and a fishing trip complement each other nicely. Raw fish is low in calories per piece, but it is renewable and cheap, making it a dependable backbone for long-term survival rather than a one-off feast.

Frequently asked questions

What is the fishing rod recipe in DayZ?

Combine a Long Wooden Stick (or a Sharpened Stick) with a piece of Rope to craft a Simple Fishing Rod. You then attach a hook baited with an earthworm to actually catch fish.

How do I get bait for fishing?

Dig up Earthworms by equipping a knife, shovel, pickaxe or hoe, looking at the ground and using the “dig for worms” action. A shovel yields about three worms per dig, and worms never spoil, so they store well.

What fish can I catch and where?

Rod fishing in fresh water ponds and rivers catches Carp, while the coastal sea yields Mackerel. Traps can also pull in smaller species like sardines or bitterlings depending on the trap and water type.

Fishing pairs perfectly with longer survival projects — once you have a steady food supply you can range further for gear. If you are building a base or running supply trips, see our guide to the best base building locations and our breakdown of the best loot locations and military bases. Fishing also matters on the colder maps: read our Sakhal Frostline DLC guide for cold-weather survival.

Stocking a shared larder is far more fun with a crew. If you want a persistent world to fish, hunt and build on together, you can set up a private DayZ server for you and your friends, and our DayZ server setup documentation walks you through configuration step by step.
