Palworld Best Pals by Element: Top Picks for Every Type

Every fight in Palworld is decided by elements long before you tap an attack button. The game runs on a nine-type matchup system, and a Pal swinging the right element hits for double while the wrong one chips away at half strength. If you want a combat lineup that covers any tower boss, world boss or PvP duel, you need to know the strongest Pal in each element and exactly why it earns the slot. This guide ranks the best combat Pal for Fire, Water, Grass, Electric, Ice, Ground, Dark, Dragon and Neutral, all verified against the official Palworld wiki and the paldb.cc database.

How element damage works in Palworld

Palworld uses nine typings: Fire, Water, Grass, Electric, Ice, Ground, Dark, Dragon and Neutral. When your attack’s element is strong against the defender, it deals roughly double damage (super effective). When it is weak, it deals about half (not very effective). The official matchups form a clean loop: Fire beats Grass and Ice; Water beats Fire; Grass beats Ground; Electric beats Water; Ice beats Dragon; Ground beats Electric; Dark beats Neutral; Dragon beats Dark; and Neutral has no offensive advantage against anything. Each type also takes extra damage from whatever beats it, so a Fire Pal facing a Water attack is in real trouble.

That loop is the whole reason a “best Pal per element” lineup matters. Carrying one strong attacker from several elements means you almost always have a super-effective option in your party, whatever you run into. Dual-typed Pals (Jormuntide Ignis is Dragon/Fire, Orserk is Dragon/Electric) inherit the strengths and weaknesses of both types at once, which can be a blessing or a liability depending on the matchup.

Fire, Water and Grass

For Fire, Jormuntide Ignis is the standout. Per paldb.cc it is a Dragon/Fire Pal with a very high melee attack stat, and its Partner Skill, Stormbringer Lava Dragon, lets you ride it while boosting your Fire-type attacks (scaling up to +100% at max level). It is bred from Jormuntide + Blazehowl. For Water, the regular Jormuntide posts the strongest Water combat profile and doubles as a fast sea mount, with the bonus that pure-Water typing avoids the Ice/Ground weaknesses its Dragon/Fire sibling carries. For Grass, Verdash is the pick: its Grassland Speedster Partner Skill increases your movement speed and infuses Grass element into your attacks, turning it into a mobile, hard-hitting mid-game ally.

Electric, Ice and Ground

Orserk (Dragon/Electric) is the strongest Electric attacker, blending powerful Electric and Dragon moves; it is also famous for being one of the only Pals with Level 4 Generating Electricity, so it pulls double duty as a base power source. If you are still early, Grizzbolt is the accessible alternative, a ridable bear that wields a machine gun. For Ice, nothing beats the legendary Frostallion: as a flying mount it converts your attacks to Ice and enhances Ice damage, which is exactly what you want when hunting Dragon-type bosses. For Ground, Anubis remains a top-tier active combat partner, landing wide spin-kick and shockwave AoE attacks that punish clustered enemies and Electric Pals alike.

Dark, Dragon and Neutral

Dark is one of the most valuable offensive elements because it dominates the huge population of Neutral Pals. Necromus (Dark) charges with twin spears and is the desert counterpart to Paladius, while Shadowbeak (Dark) brings a devastating Dark Laser beam; both are elite picks. For Dragon, Jetragon is the undisputed number one, with an enormous attack stat and the title of fastest Pal in the game on land, air and sea, even able to fire a rocket launcher while flying. For Neutral, Paladius hits remarkably hard despite having no type advantage, and it’s one of the fastest land mounts (just behind Necromus), making it a reliable all-purpose bruiser that no element resists.

A note on the absolute ceiling: the raid-boss Pal Bellanoir (Dark) is frequently cited as the single strongest Pal by raw stats, but it is extremely rare and tied to raid content rather than a standard catch. If you want to take it on, our Palworld Bellanoir raid guide covers summoning and beating that fight.

Building a balanced combat party

You do not need every Pal above at once. A practical five-slot lineup covers most of the type wheel: a Dragon nuke (Jetragon), an Ice answer to other Dragons (Frostallion), a Dark pick for Neutral mobs (Necromus or Shadowbeak), a Fire or Water option, and a Ground bruiser (Anubis). Many of these picks are legendaries or rare breeds, so it is worth knowing where the late-game content lives. Several of the strongest Pals were added or reinforced through the Sakurajima Summer Update and later the Feybreak Island update; our Sakurajima guide and Feybreak Island guide walk through that new content and where it sits in the world.

Frequently asked questions

What is the strongest Pal in Palworld for combat?

Among standard catchable Pals, Jetragon (Dragon) is the consensus S-tier combat pick thanks to its enormous attack and unmatched speed. The rare raid Pal Bellanoir is widely described as the single strongest by raw stats, but it is tied to raid content rather than a normal encounter.

How much extra damage does a super-effective attack do?

A super-effective elemental attack deals roughly double damage, while a not-very-effective attack deals about half. That is why carrying one strong attacker from several elements matters so much – you almost always have a super-effective option ready.

Which element is best against the most Pals?

Dark is one of the most valuable offensive elements because Neutral Pals are extremely common in the world and Dark is super effective against them. A strong Dark attacker like Necromus or Shadowbeak clears a large slice of the bestiary with type advantage.
