How to Change Difficulty on Your Valheim Server
Learn how to adjust World Modifiers to change combat difficulty, resource rates, death penalties, and more on your Valheim dedicated server.
Valheim uses World Modifiers to let you customize the difficulty of your server. You can adjust combat challenge, resource gathering rates, death penalties, raid frequency, and portal restrictions directly from the XGamingServer panel.
Available World Modifiers

| Death Penalty | Casual, Very Easy, Easy, Hard, Hardcore | How much skill XP you lose on death |

| Raids | None, Much Less, Less, More, Much More | How often enemy raids attack your base |
| Portals | Casual, Hard, Very Hard | What items can be taken through portals |
Changing World Modifiers
Open the XGamingServer panel
Log in to the XGamingServer panel and stop your Valheim server.
Go to Startup
In the sidebar, go to Startup.
Adjust World Modifiers
Find the World Modifier settings you want to change and select your preferred values from the dropdown menus.
Resetting World Modifiers
Valheim can sometimes have issues when changing World Modifiers on an existing world. If your changes aren't applying correctly, you can reset them using console commands.
⚠️ Warning: We recommend creating a backup in
Backupsbefore resetting World Modifiers.
Connect as admin
Make sure you're set up as an admin with the console enabled, then connect to your server.
Open the console
Press F5 to open the in-game console.
Enable dev commands
Type devcommands and press Enter. You should see devcommands = true.
Reset and save
Type setworldpreset default to clear all World Modifiers, then type save to save the world.
💡 Tip: After resetting, press
F1to verify that your World Modifiers have been cleared. You can then set new modifiers through the panel using the steps above.
