How to Change Your Valheim Server Version

Learn how to switch your Valheim server to a different version or beta branch.

If you want to play on a specific version of Valheim instead of the latest public release, you can switch to a different Steam beta branch. This is useful for testing upcoming features or staying on a version compatible with your mods.

⚠️ Warning: Changing server versions may cause issues with your existing world save. Always create a backup in Backups before switching versions. We officially only support the main public branch of the game.

Switching to a Beta Branch

Stop your server

Access the XGamingServer panel and stop your Valheim server.

Go to Startup

In the sidebar, go to Startup.

Set the beta branch

Find the Steam Beta Branch setting and enter the branch name you want to use. See the list below for available branches.

Reinstall the server

Go to Dashboard and click Reinstall Server to download the new version. Wait for the installation to complete.

Start your server

Once the reinstall finishes, start your server.

Available Beta Branches

You can find all currently available Valheim beta branches on SteamDB.

The default version is public (latest stable release). To switch back to the latest version, clear the beta branch field and reinstall.

📝 Note: If you're switching to a significantly different version, consider deleting all files in Files before reinstalling for a clean installation. This prevents potential conflicts between old and new server files.
