How to Update Your Valheim Server

Learn how to keep your Valheim dedicated server up to date with the latest game patches.

XGamingServer Valheim servers support automatic updates by default. When a new Valheim update is released, your server will download and apply it during the next restart.

Keeping your server updated is important — players running a newer version of Valheim won't be able to connect to a server running an older version.

Updating Your Server

Open the XGamingServer panel

Access the XGamingServer panel and select your Valheim server.

Go to Startup

In the sidebar, go to Startup.

Verify automatic updates

Find the Automatic Update setting and make sure it's enabled.

Restart your server

Go to Console and restart your server. It will check for updates and install them before launching.

If no update is available, the server starts normally with no delay.

After a Game Update

Valheim updates can sometimes affect mod compatibility or change game mechanics. After a major update:

  • Check your mods — Visit the Mods page or check Thunderstore to verify your installed mods are compatible with the new version
  • Test your server — Join and verify that gameplay and mods are working as expected
  • Check patch notes — Review the official Valheim patch notes on Steam for details

💡 Tip: If a major update breaks your mods, you can temporarily disable automatic updates in Startup until mod authors release compatible versions. Just remember to re-enable updates once your mods are updated.
