That freedom is great, but it also lets you wander into a level-45 desert at character level 8 and get one-shot by an Alpha Pal. How Palworld progression actually works
Three separate currencies drive your advancement, and confusing them is the most common beginner mistake. Player level comes from XP (catching new Pals, crafting, combat, exploring) and unlocks technology tiers. Technology Points are spent in the tech tree on recipes and structures; you earn 6 per level-up plus 1 per Fast Travel statue you discover. Ancient Technology Points are a separate, scarcer currency used only for the most powerful gear, and you get them almost entirely from bosses and dungeons.
Because Tech Points are tied to levels and Fast Travel discovery, the fastest way to “progress” early is to catch Pals (capturing a dozen of the same species grants bonus XP) and to physically explore for travel points. The level cap has risen across updates, so treat any single cap number as version-dependent rather than fixed.
Region order by difficulty
The map is roughly a difficulty gradient. You start on the Plateau of Beginnings and the surrounding Windswept Hills, the safest low-level zone. From there, difficulty climbs as you head outward toward the volcanic southwest and the desert east. A reliable rule: if the wild Pals are more than a few levels above you, you are in the wrong region for now.
- Windswept Hills (approx. levels 1–15) — your starter zone, first base, and grass/neutral Pals.
- Bamboo Groves / central regions (approx. 15–30) — stretch your legs here once you can craft better gear.
- Mount Obsidian / volcanic southwest (approx. 30–45) — Fire Pals, sulfur and ore, much higher danger.
- Astral Mountains (northeast snow, approx. 35–50) — Ice/Dark Pals and harsh cold; bring cold-protection gear.
- Dessicated Desert (east, approx. 40–50) — the hottest, highest-level mainland region; come prepared.
Exact level bands vary slightly by update and by which Pals spawn where, so use them as a planning guide rather than a hard contract. The Sakurajima and Feybreak DLC islands sit beyond the base map and are firmly endgame content.
The tower bosses, in order
Tower bosses are the closest thing Palworld has to a main quest. There are five in the base game, and the intended path is lowest level to highest. Each is a faction leader paired with a powerful Pal, fought under a time limit, and each grants 5 Ancient Technology Points the first time you win — so clearing all five is your single biggest source of that currency. If you own the DLC, two more towers extend the ladder past the base game: the Moonflower Tower (Saya & Selyne, around level 55, weak to Dragon) from Sakurajima, and the Feybreak Tower (Bjorn & Bastigor, around level 60, weak to Fire) from Feybreak. Bastigor in particular has an enormous health pool and demands full endgame gear, making seven total towers for players on the latest content.
Key milestones: mounts, guns, and ancient tech
Alongside the towers, a handful of unlocks transform how you play. Hit these and the game opens up dramatically.
- First ranged weapon (~level 3): the Old Bow is your earliest crafted weapon — make it as soon as you can. The Three Shot Bow follows around level 10 and carries you through much of the early game.
- First mounts: early ground mounts like Direhowl (via its Saddled Harness in the tech tree) get you moving faster; flying mounts later trivialize map traversal and resource runs.
- Firearms tier: the Makeshift Handgun unlocks in the mid-20s, with stronger guns scaling up — Pump-Action Shotgun and Assault Rifle in the mid-40s, and the Rocket Launcher near level 49. Guns are the difference-maker against high-level Alphas and tower bosses.
- Base power structures: the Crusher, Statue of Power (for leveling Pals), Breeding Farm, and Production Assembly Line are cheap Tech Point buys that massively accelerate everything else.
- Ancient Technology gear: spend those hard-won Ancient Points on quality-of-life and power items — Grappling Gun tiers, Air Dash Boots, the Hyper-tier production and Pal gear. These are gated behind boss clears, not levels.

- Build a starter base in the Windswept Hills, catch a dozen of a few species for the XP bonus, and unlock the Old Bow.
- Clear Tower 1 (Zoe & Grizzbolt) with Ground Pals — your first 5 Ancient Points and a big confidence boost.

FAQ
Do I have to fight the tower bosses in order?
No — there is no hard requirement to fight any tower, and you can attempt them in any sequence. But the towers are deliberately tuned from low to high level (roughly 10, 25, 40, 45, 50 in the base game), so the listed order is by far the smoothest path. Skipping ahead usually means fighting a boss far above your gear level.
What is the fastest way to get Ancient Technology Points?
Tower bosses give the most (5 each on first clear), so clearing all of them is the priority. Alpha Pals in the open world give 1 each on first defeat or capture, and dungeon chests can contain manuals worth 1 point. There is no repeatable farm — points are tied to first-time clears, so progression naturally spreads you across the map.
When do guns become available?
Crafted firearms start in the mid-20s with the Makeshift Handgun, with shotguns, assault rifles, and rocket launchers unlocking through the 40s.
