Monuments are where Rust’s best loot lives — and its biggest fights. This guide covers safe zones vs hostile monuments, the green/blue/red keycard system, fuses and puzzles, the major monuments by tier, and where to farm scrap safely as a beginner.
Safe zones vs hostile monuments
Safe zones — Outpost and Bandit Camp — let you trade, buy from vending machines, recycle and research without being shot; turrets enforce the peace (don’t pull a weapon there). Every other monument is hostile: NPC scientists, radiation in places, and other players hunting the same loot.
The keycard system
Locked rooms need keycards in three tiers — green, blue and red. The system is laddered: you typically use a green card to reach a room containing a blue card, and a blue to reach a red. Many puzzles also require power — find a fuse, insert it, and flip switches in the right order to open the loot room. Carry spare green cards and a fuse whenever you run monuments.
Major monuments by tier
- Green-card / beginner-safe: Supermarket, Gas Station, Mining Outpost, Junkyard, Satellite Dish, Sewer Branch and the Dome — low radiation, easy scrap and components, on-site recyclers.
- Blue-card (mid): Water Treatment, Train Yard, Airfield and Power Plant — better loot, more scientists, light radiation gear recommended.
- Red-card (high): Launch Site and Military Tunnels — the toughest, with the best loot, elite scientists and heavy PvP. Go geared.
- Water / event: Small and Large Oil Rig (blue card, scientists and the patrol heli) and the roaming Cargo Ship.
Farming scrap & components
Most monuments have recyclers — feed components in for scrap, the currency you spend at Outpost and on the tech tree. Beginners should start at the safe barrel-dense monuments (Supermarket, Gas Station) for low-risk scrap; see our scrap farming guide. Contesting Launch Site or Oil Rig gives far more, but it’s a guaranteed fight. Grab item shortnames and admin spawn commands for testing loot with our Rust Item IDs tool.
