Catching Pals is the heart of Palworld — but if your spheres keep bouncing off, you’re probably missing a few key mechanics. Catch rate isn’t random; it’s a formula you can stack in your favour. This guide explains exactly how capturing works and how to dramatically improve your success rate.

Pal Sphere tiers and Capture Power
Every sphere adds a base “Capture Power”, and higher tiers unlock as you level up. Match the sphere to the Pal — using a higher-tier sphere than the Pal’s level gives a positive bonus, while a lower-tier sphere gives a penalty.
| Sphere | Capture Power | Unlocks at |
|---|---|---|
| Pal Sphere | +7 | Level 1 |
| Mega Sphere | +14 | Level 7 |
| Giga Sphere | +20 | Level 16 |
| Hyper Sphere | +26 | Level 26 |
| Ultra Sphere | +32 | Level 36 |
| Legendary Sphere | +37 | Level 46 |
The five things that raise your catch rate
- Lower their HP — right down. This matters more than anything. Getting a Pal from 20% to ~1% HP can swing your catch rate up by 10–20%. Whittle bosses down to a sliver before throwing.
- Throw at the back. Hitting a Pal in the back gives a flat capture bonus — up to around +20% depending on its level. Circle behind whenever you can.
- Use the right sphere tier. Bring spheres rated for the Pal’s level (or higher). A too-weak sphere actively penalises your odds.
- Exploit element weakness. Attacking a Pal’s elemental weakness deals more damage, letting you drop its HP fast and accurately without killing it.
- Apply status effects. Conditions help keep the target controlled while you weaken and throw.
Permanent upgrades: the Statue of Power
Early in the technology tree you can build a Statue of Power. Feed it Lifmunk Effigies — collectibles scattered across the map — and it permanently increases your capture rate for every Pal. Hunting Effigies as you explore is one of the highest-value things a new player can do, because the bonus applies forever.
The catch combo bonus
Catching ten of the same Pal species builds a capture bonus that boosts the stats of future catches of that species — and rewards you with XP and Technology Points. So when you find a strong Pal, it’s worth catching extras rather than killing them.
A reliable catching routine
- Bring a Pal that counters the target’s element, plus a stock of the right-tier spheres.
- Weaken the target into the red — aim for a sliver of HP.
- Apply a status effect if you can.
- Circle to its back and throw.
- If it breaks out, keep throwing — each attempt is an independent roll.
Follow this and even Alpha and Legendary Pals become catchable — see our legendary Pals guide for the tough ones.

Does throwing at the back help in Palworld?
Yes — a back throw gives a flat catch bonus of up to around 20% depending on the Pal’s level.
