Palworld combat runs on a rock-paper-scissors element system. Hit a Pal with the type it’s weak to and you deal 50% more damage; use the wrong type and you’ll be chipping away forever. Knowing the type chart is the difference between melting a tower boss and getting wiped. Here’s the full Palworld element chart and how to use it.

The nine elements
Every Pal (and every attack) belongs to one of nine elements: Neutral, Fire, Water, Electric, Grass, Ground, Ice, Dragon and Dark. Each type is strong against one element and weak to another — with two exceptions: Fire has two strengths, and Neutral has none.

How to read it
Attacking with a type that the enemy is weak to deals 1.5× damage. So against a Dragon-type boss, bring Ice attacks; against a Fire enemy, bring Water. Note that the element that matters is the attack’s element — which usually matches your active Pal’s type — not your character’s weapon. Swapping to the right Pal before a fight is the single biggest damage boost available.
The key matchups to remember
- Dragon types are the strongest late-game Pals (like Jetragon) — counter them with Ice (Frostallion is perfect).
- Dark types come out at night and beat Neutral — counter them with Dragon.
- Fire is the most flexible attacking type, beating both Grass and Ice — counter it with Water.
- Neutral has no strengths but only fears Dark, making Neutral Pals safe generalists.
Dual-type Pals
Some Pals have two elements. Their weaknesses and resistances can cancel out — for example, a Water/Grass Pal takes normal damage from Fire, because Fire is strong against Grass but weak against Water and the two effects offset. Always check a dual-type Pal’s full typing before assuming a matchup.
Build a team that covers everything
You can’t win every fight with one Pal, so carry a small team that covers the main threats: an Ice Pal for Dragons, a Water Pal for Fire enemies, a Dragon Pal for Dark, and a hard-hitting generalist. Our best Pals tier list shows the strongest option in each element, and the capture guide covers exploiting weakness to catch tough Pals.
