Your weapon decides your fights in Rust, and what’s “best” changes through a wipe as you unlock and craft better gear. This tier list ranks the weapons by stage — early, mid and late game — so you always know what to run and what to aim for next.
Early game
- Hunting Bow / Crossbow — cheap, quiet and craftable on day one; your wipe-morning workhorse for hunting and the odd cheeky kill.
- Eoka Pistol — wildly unreliable, but it costs almost nothing and lets you gun-rush or cheeky-raid a sleeping player early.
- Nailgun — your first proper firearm; strong up close and cheap to feed.
- Revolver / Double Barrel — early sidearms for self-defence.
Mid game
- Custom SMG — a strong, high-rate close-range spray; a wipe staple.
- Thompson — forgiving recoil and great close-to-mid; many players’ favourite mid-tier gun.
- Semi-Automatic Rifle — excellent value at range with manageable recoil; carries you until you craft an AK.
- Pump Shotgun — base defence and brutal in close fights.
Late game
- AK-47 (Assault Rifle) — the king. Highest damage and skill ceiling; the gun that wins wipes in good hands.
- LR-300 — easier recoil than the AK and superb at mid-range; many prefer it for consistency.
- Bolt-Action Rifle — long-range one-shots for snipers and roof campers.
- M249 — the rare LMG, a monster you’ll usually only get from elite crates.
What to craft first
Focus your scrap on one primary — usually the Semi Rifle into the AK — before branching into explosives and luxuries. Whatever you run, recoil control wins the fight: drill the patterns in our recoil guide and pattern viewer, and unlock guns efficiently via the tech tree.
