Your weapon decides your fights in Rust, and what’s “best” changes through a wipe as you unlock and craft better gear. This tier list ranks the guns by stage — early, mid and late game — with a stats table for the headline weapons (damage, DPS and the workbench you need), then the picks for each phase so you always know what to run and what to aim for next.
Rust gun stats & tier table (2026)

Early game
- Hunting Bow / Crossbow — cheap, quiet and craftable on day one; your wipe-morning workhorse for hunting and the odd cheeky kill.
- Eoka Pistol — wildly unreliable, but it costs almost nothing and lets you gun-rush or cheeky-raid a sleeping player early.
- Nailgun — your first proper firearm; strong up close and cheap to feed.
- Custom SMG — once you hit Workbench 1, this is the best gun-per-scrap in the game: a 30-round mag for 8 HQM, an SMG Body and a Metal Spring.
- Revolver / Double Barrel — early sidearms for self-defence.
Mid game
- Thompson — the best Tier 2 gun for the money. Around 300 DPS with a forgiving recoil pattern; it beats every other WB2-craftable weapon on cost-to-performance.
- Semi-Automatic Rifle — excellent value at range with manageable recoil; carries you until you craft an AK.
- Pump Shotgun — base defence and brutal in close fights.
Late game
- AK-47 (Assault Rifle) — the king. 50 damage and ~375 DPS with the highest skill ceiling; the gun that wins wipes in good hands, and the right tool for roughly a third of the fights you’ll take.
- MP5A4 — ~375 DPS and a genuinely top-tier feel; the pick when you’re fighting indoors or in tight spaces.
- LR-300 — 40 damage and ~333 DPS; loses to the AK per shot but wins on accuracy feel and bullet velocity, so many prefer it for consistency at mid-range.
- Bolt-Action Rifle — long-range one-shots for snipers and roof campers; the best monument-defence weapon.
- M249 — the rare LMG with the best raw stats in the game, but you’ll usually only get it from elite crates.
What to craft first
Focus your scrap on one primary — usually the Custom SMG, then the SAR, then the AK — before branching into explosives and luxuries. Whatever you run, recoil control wins the fight: drill the patterns in our recoil guide and pattern viewer, and unlock guns efficiently via the tech tree.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best gun in Rust?
The AK-47 (Assault Rifle) — 50 damage, ~375 DPS and the highest ceiling in the game — has topped every Rust tier list since launch. For indoor fights the MP5A4 edges it, and the crate-only M249 has the best raw stats, but the AK is the all-round best gun you can craft.
What’s the best gun before the AK?
The Thompson at Workbench 2 — roughly 300 DPS with easy recoil and a low cost, the best value mid-game weapon. The Semi-Auto Rifle is the better long-range option at the same tier. Both bridge the gap until you can craft an AK at Workbench 3.
AK or LR-300 — which is better?
The AK hits harder per shot (50 vs 40 damage) and outputs more DPS, so it’s the higher ceiling. The LR-300 has an easier recoil pattern and higher bullet velocity, making it more forgiving and very strong at mid-range. Pick the AK if you can control recoil; the LR if you want consistency.
