Rust Sulfur Farming & Gunpowder Guide (Explosives Costs)

How to farm sulfur and craft gunpowder in Rust — sulfur nodes and quarries, smelting, the gunpowder recipe, and how much you need for C4, rockets and ammo.

Sulfur is the lifeblood of raiding in Rust — every explosive traces back to it, so a raid is really a sulfur budget. This guide covers where to farm sulfur, smelting it, the gunpowder recipe, and exactly how much sulfur each explosive costs so you farm the right amount and not a barrel more.

Farming sulfur

Sulfur comes from the bright-yellow sulfur nodes, mined with a pickaxe or jackhammer, and in bulk from a Mining Quarry placed on a sulfur deposit (found by throwing a Survey Charge). Late wipe, a running sulfur quarry is what funds a raid — solos farm nodes, groups run quarries. Sulfur fields concentrate in the arid and desert parts of the map.

Smelt ore, then craft gunpowder

Sulfur ore smelts into refined sulfur in any furnace, exactly like metal (2.5 seconds per ore). You then combine it with charcoal — the by-product of burning wood in your furnaces — to make gunpowder. The standard recipe makes 10 Gun Powder from 30 Charcoal + 20 Sulfur at a workbench, and a Mixing Table produces it faster and more efficiently, which is why a mixing table is a key pre-raid investment. From gunpowder you craft Explosives, then C4, rockets, satchels and explosive ammo.

Sulfur cost per explosive

This is the table that matters — the total sulfur to craft one of each raiding tool. Multiply by how many the raid needs.

ExplosiveSulfur eachMainly used on
Timed Explosive (C4)2,200Hard walls, armoured doors
Rocket1,400Walls, doors, splash damage
Incendiary Rocket610Cheap soft-wall / sheet-metal raids
Satchel Charge480Wooden & sheet doors, early raids
Beancan Grenade60Cheap door raids (unreliable)
Explosive Ammo (per round)~25Soft walls, online raids
Totals include the gunpowder and components in each craft. Cross-check wall counts in the raid cost chart.

The explosive chain

  • Sulfur + Charcoal → Gun Powder (the foundation of everything).
  • Gun Powder + components → Explosives (the ingredient for C4).
  • Explosives → C4, Rockets, Satchels, Explosive Ammo — your raiding tools.

Frequently asked questions

How much sulfur for a C4 in Rust?

About 2,200 sulfur per Timed Explosive Charge, including the gunpowder and components. A rocket is roughly 1,400, a satchel 480. That’s why raiders count walls in C4 and budget sulfur before ever leaving base.

What’s the gunpowder recipe in Rust?

10 Gun Powder from 30 Charcoal + 20 Sulfur at a workbench. A Mixing Table makes the same gunpowder faster and more efficiently, so it pays for itself before a big raid. Charcoal comes free from burning wood in your furnaces.

Where do I farm sulfur fastest?

Sulfur nodes in the arid/desert biome for solos; a Mining Quarry on a surveyed sulfur deposit for groups, which produces sulfur ore passively. A running quarry is the late-wipe engine that funds repeated raids.
