How to Set Max Players on Your Arma Reforger Server
Learn how to change the maximum number of players on your Arma Reforger server. Covers recommended player counts by scenario and performance tips.
The max players setting (maxPlayers) controls how many players can be connected to your Arma Reforger server at the same time. The value ranges from 1 to 128, with the default being 64. Getting this setting right is important — too high and your server may lag, too low and players get turned away at the door.
Setting Max Players
Open the XGamingServer panel
Log in to the XGamingServer panel and stop your Arma Reforger server.
Open Arma Reforger Config
In the sidebar, go to Arma Reforger Config.
Change max players
On the Game tab, change the Max Players value (1-128).
Recommended Player Counts by Scenario
The ideal max player setting depends on which scenario you're running. Setting it too high for a small map leads to spawn camping and resource starvation, while setting it too low on a large map makes the world feel empty.
| Scenario Type | Recommended Max Players | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Conflict (Everon, Arland) | 32–64 | Large-scale warfare designed for high player counts. 64 players is the sweet spot for full-scale battles. |
| Combat Ops | 4–16 | Cooperative PvE missions designed for small squads. More than 16 players trivializes the challenge. |
| Capture & Hold | 8–24 | Smaller objective-based PvP. Higher counts can work on larger maps. |
| Game Master Sessions | 2–32 | Depends entirely on what the Game Master is running. Start small and scale up. |
Performance Considerations
Every connected player adds load to your server — each player needs AI calculations, physics, network bandwidth, and entity tracking. If you're noticing lag or desync:
- Lower your max players to match actual demand. There's no benefit to setting it to 128 if you only ever have 20 players.
- Monitor your server resources in
Activityon the XGamingServer panel to see if you're hitting CPU or RAM limits. - A good rule of thumb: set max players to about 1.5x your expected peak so there's room for friends-of-friends without overloading the server.
💡 Tip: Large-scale Conflict scenarios work best with higher player counts (32-64+), while Combat Ops and Capture & Hold modes are designed for smaller groups (8-16 players). Match your max player setting to the scenario you're running for the best experience.
